We believe that the students of Maternity B.V.M. are unique individuals who approach learning through various cultural backgrounds, modes of development, and natural abilities. Class participation, class work and quality homework will enable the students to reach desired levels of achievement.

F&P Text Level Gradient™

Reading is a highly complex process. Readers must build a system of strategic actions for processing texts from levels A–Z+ that begin with early reading behaviors and becomes a network of strategic actions for reading increasingly difficult texts. The F&P Text Level Gradient™ should be seen as a continuum of progress for readers.

The F&P Text Level Gradient™ is the most recognized and trusted tool for selecting books for small-group reading instruction. All of Fountas and Pinnell's work references their F&P Text Level Gradient™—often referred to as Guided Reading levels or Fountas & Pinnell levels—beginning with the publication of Guided Reading: Good First Teaching for All Children, and extending to the publication of The Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum, the Benchmark Assessment System 1and 2and the Leveled Literacy Intervention Systems.

Fountas and Pinnell's goal is to support the child's development of self-initiating actions he will be able to apply to a range of texts of similar difficulty. With daily teaching, the teacher helps the child climb the ladder of text difficulty with success. The goal of guided reading is to bring the child to the level of complex texts appropriate for the grade, in doing so, teaching must begin with where the child is able to engage with some success, so that there is a point of contact, thereby engaging the child's development of a self-extending system for processing texts.

Everyday Math 4

Why It Works

Everyday Mathematics is a research-based and field-tested curriculum that focuses on developing children’s understandings and skills in ways that produce life-long mathematical power.

The Everyday Mathematics curriculum emphasizes:

  • Use of concrete, real-life examples that are meaningful and memorable as an introduction to key mathematical concepts.

  • Repeated exposures to mathematical concepts and skills to develop children’s ability to recall knowledge from long-term memory.

  • Frequent practice of basic computation skills to build mastery of procedures and quick recall of facts, often through games and verbal exercises.

  • Use of multiple methods and problem-solving strategies to foster true proficiency and accommodate different learning styles.

Each grade of the Everyday Mathematics curriculum is carefully designed to build and expand a student’s mathematical proficiency and understanding.

Our goal: to build powerful mathematical thinkers.

The Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI)

The Reading Inventory practice tests and assessments are designed to help identify a child's strengths and weaknesses in reading and comprehension of texts, as wells as identify any learning issues that may need to be addressed. Teachers and parents can use the SRI test results both to determine what sort of additional support the student needs to succeed. The ultimate goal of the Reading Inventory is to help prepare all students for college-level material.

Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI)

The LLI is a powerful, short-term intervention that provides daily, intensive, small-group instruction, which supplements classroom literacy teaching. LLI turns struggling readers into successful ones with engaging leveled books and fast-paced, systematically-designed lessons.

Everyday Math

The foundational principles that guide Everyday Math's development address what children know what they come to school, how they learn best, what they should learn, and the role of problem solving and assessment in the curriculum. Everyday Math builds on a child's early dispositions, attitudes, and knowledge. In a spiral curriculum, learning is spread over time rather than concentrated in shorter periods. Content is revised repeatedly over months and across grades.
