MATERNITY BVM???

Q: What in the world does that name mean???

A:  We get that question a lot!
Maternity refers to being a mother.
BVM stands for BLESSED VIRGIN MARY.
Mother + BLESSED VIRGIN MARY =
MOTHER MARY

our students.
History:

Father Francis Caraher was the Pastor of Maternity B.V.M. Parish in 1911.
Seeing that the church was fully functioning and was serving the spiritual needs of
the congregation, Fr. Caraher recognized the need to provide the parish families
an outlet for quality Catholic Education for their children.  With Sr. Gertrude
Marie as principal, the school opened in September of 1911 with 300 students.
The school was awarded accreditation under Principal-Superior Sister Agnes
Therese in 1917.

In the 1920’s word spread about the superior quality education provided by the
Sisters of Providence at Maternity B.V.M. School, and parents were eager to
send their children to the school. This interest continued to grow steadily
through the 1930’s and 1940’s.  There were large classes and multiple classes for
some grade levels. The school which was located initially above the church, but
soon became crowded.  There was an obvious need for additional classroom
facilities.

With an addition of a new building in 1950, the enrollment had grown to over 650
students.  This increase in enrollment again grown steadily through the 1950’s
and 1960’s.  In the 1970’s Maternity B.V.M. School was forced to face a situation
they had never experienced in the past.  It was the first time in the school’s
history when enrollment numbers were not increasing, but in fact the opposite.
The school was experiencing incredible financial difficulty.  However, thanks to
the dedicated school and parish community, the school managed to overcome
these obstacles.

Currently, Maternity B.V.M. School boasts a certified and qualified staff of both
religious and lay people, an active and functioning school board.  The school is
also thriving through the generous support of the Archdiocese of Chicago, 2
Patrons from Big Shoulders Fund, and on staff full time development associate.
Maternity B.V.M. School is making constant strides to improve the school to
provide quality Catholic education to our students.
